Rights Group Warns Katsina Government Against Interference in Sheikh Masussuka’s Religious Activities
The Impactive Centre for Accountability, Democracy and Rights (ICADAR) has cautioned the Katsina State Government against what it described as undue interference in the peaceful religious activities of Islamic cleric, Sheikh Yahaya Masussuka.
In a statement released on Wednesday, ICADAR’s Executive Director, Dr. Bello Ishaq, criticised the recent invitation extended to the cleric over alleged violations of Islamic law, describing the move as unnecessary and suspicious.
The organisation noted that Sheikh Masussuka is widely recognised for promoting peace, tolerance, and religious coexistence in accordance with Nigerian laws. It emphasised that Nigeria is a democratic country governed by the rule of law and respect for religious freedom.
ICADAR warned that any action infringing on the cleric’s right to freely practise his religion would constitute a violation of both Nigerian and international legal standards. It further condemned the alleged use of state institutions to pursue sectarian interests, urging individuals with grievances to seek redress through the courts rather than resort to state-backed intimidation.
The group cautioned that deploying government authority for sectarian disputes could undermine justice and pose risks to national unity. It also called on Governor Dikko Radda to ensure that his administration is not manipulated by political or sectarian actors.
ICADAR reaffirmed its commitment to protecting citizens’ rights to religious freedom and peaceful coexistence. The organisation said it will continue to monitor developments closely and hold authorities accountable should any unjust actions be taken against Sheikh Masussuka.
